Speed Read-Content Shares: Not as Easy to Get as Stock Market Shares

Okay, maybe it is a little easier to get your content shares through social media than to get shares on the stock market, but then again, you can buy stock market shares. You can’t really buy shares from social media users; you have to put in the time and effort to get them.

Our last Speed Read article talked about the importance of shares over likes when it comes to social media. Now we’ll talk about some of the best practices to get those shares so maybe you don’t have to resort to buying them.

1. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE GOOD STUFF

What do we mean by that? Simple, make sure you’re using good, quality content your audience wants to read. We’re not saying every piece has to be a home run, but they should try for it. You might think having a lot of content gets you noticed and shared, but is it better to have a dozen mediocre articles that are ignored or one awesome piece everyone shares? Quality wins out over quantity because if it’s good, people will share it.

2. HEADLINES GET ATTENTION

Having a clever, memorable, attention-grabbing headline goes a long way to getting you shares. The headline is usually the first thing people see and gets them interested in your content, so why not make it interesting? Look at some of our headlines. They’re witty and get us noticed. The more we’re noticed, the more likely we are to get shares. So take the time to write a headline that jumps out.

3. A GRAPHIC IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Okay, you still need words for your content, but you’ve got to make it look appealing, too. Images, graphics, and videos reinforce what your content is saying and capture the attention of your audience more than words alone. Content pieces that contain some type of visual element get more attention, so don’t be shy when using them, but make sure they’re tailored to your content. The more visually appealing your content is, the more likely it is to be shared.

4. KNOW WHO’S READING YOUR STUFF AND WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE

Not everyone wants to read everything you put out, so don’t try to reach everyone. Instead, figure out who your audience is and what they want to see and give it to them. If you’re marketing to a sports-themed audience, don’t provide them content about interior decorating. They won’t read it, let alone share it. So know who you’re trying to reach and make it easy for them to find the information they want to see. If you give the people what they want quickly and easily, they’ll give you shares.

5. USE WHO YOU KNOW TO GET YOU SHARES

Colleagues, family, friends, neighbors. Use everyone you can to get shared, and we mean everyone, including yourself. Don’t just post it and expect it to start getting shares right away. Give your content a boost by getting people you know to share it first. Why? For one, their networks will help you reach other networks, and two, the more others see how much your content is shared, the more likely they are to do the same.

6. SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE

If you’re not sharing other people’s content, how can you expect them to do the same for you? The best way to get more people to notice and share your content is to share theirs. Sharing is a give and take and you can’t really expect shares to flood in if you’re not making an effort to do the same for others. It’s a “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” mentality, so start scratching backs.

7. MAKE IT EASY TO SHARE

This should be a given, but it’s probably the most important step on this list. If you want to get shares, you need to make it easy for people to do so. This means having a lot of social share buttons and having them where readers can find them easily. Don’t hide them. You want them to be seen and used. While we’re at it, don’t hesitate to remind people to share, either. A little encouragement can mean the difference between being shared or ignored.

These ways of getting shares are just the foundation. The fact is, you’re not going to get shares just sitting and waiting for them. You have to make an effort to encourage people to share your content. The more effort you put in, the more you’ll see shares. Then maybe you can sit back and watch them roll in.
